OHCE members donate multitude of supplies to DHS foster care

A local organization put necessary supplies into the hands of those who work with foster kids on Monday.

Oklahoma Home Communication and Education (OHCE) members donated multiple pillowcases, drawstring bags and supplies to the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) foster care program on Monday, Aug. 28.

OHCE Chairman of the Culture and Enrichment Committee Donna Rice said as an OHCE group, they want to help fulfill the needs of different areas around the community. She said during their meetings, they came together to make 114 pillowcases, as well as drawstring bags.

Rice, who began work on the project in the beginning of 2023, said it’s taken some time to get everything together.

Rice noted they got together on May 9, during OHCE Week, and they made around 100 pillow cases that day. Then, the group proceeded to make about 89 drawstring bags, as well as purchase additional supplies to go into the bags. According to Rice, once they finished these bags, they wanted to present the supplies to DHS to help the kids in the foster care program.

She said they hope the pillowcases, bags and supplies will provide a little bit extra when the kids need them.

In total, the supplies donated included 85 draw string bags and seven extra large bags, 114 pillow cases, 72 pairs of baby socks, 114 pairs of girls socks, 72 pairs of boys socks, 90 pieces of underwear for girls, 80 pieces of underwear for boys, eight baby sleepers, two quilts, eight pacifiers, 72 hairbands, 42 baby bottles, 60 toothbrushes, 144 bottles of toothpaste, 20 bottles of baby shampoo, 20 bottles of Pantene shampoo, 20 bottles of body wash, 18 packs of wipes, 402 diapers and 208 pull ups.

“It’s just a way we felt we could help the foster care and the foster children of Stephens County,” she said.

Rice said the OHCE organization is a group of women and men who do things for the community and they do their best to help where they can.

Aside from shopping for supplies, the group had toothbrushes and toothpaste donated, as well as all of the material for the pillowcases and bags donated to them from different group members.

She said she hopes these kids feel loved with getting a few necessary supplies they need.

“If they can get a bag with a hairbrush in it — I’m excited,” she said. “Our kids, foster kids, any child — that’s our future and we need to help any way we can.”
